Make sure to read your contracts well. I made spreadsheets for every single venue before we went to see them. Between tax, gratuity, and the increase in price from 2023 to 2024. The estimated price per person at our all inclusive went from $148 (not factoring gratuity and taxes) to $218 (what were actually paying). Which is almost 150% more than we originally planned for 🥲

Is there a way to be honest with vendors and avoid the wedding unchange? I've heard so vendors charge more for weddings because most brides expect perfection, but I don't care about much. As long as I get to go home with my man, and it's adequate, it's fine. I haven't even started planning and the whole thing is overwhelming, but I promised my family that if I ever got married again, that I'd have some sort of wedding. I didn't 20 yrs ago and broke my family's heart. My dad cried and he didn't even like my x husband. I know I'm off to a better start since my family loves my fiancé. Is there a good way to find out what things cost in your area so you can start with a realistic budget? Like you just mentioned good photographers charge more than $500. Makes sense since it's days of work and a ton of equipment, but I had no idea. I'm hoping to find a full service location, but I have a feeling it's out of my budget.

So anther fun thing with parks, botanical gardens, and beaches at least for those of us in Hawaii and a factor MANY people in the wedding groups I'm in do not consider: the number of restrictions. Our botanical gardens here have the following caveats to their use for weddings, aside from a permit of course: -must observe garden hours (most close at 4pm) -you cannot restrict or prohibit other visitors use of the garden -limited parking, if the garden has an entry fee it must be paid for all guests -no alcohol, receptions, or throwing rice -No musical instruments of sound amplification (some will allow with a special permit) -No tents, chairs, tables, and similar items (special permit required but not common) -Separate permit for photography, in addition to garden permit For beaches, you need a special permit because weddings are considered commercial activity but you are not allowed to set up chairs, tables, or other similar large items that may obstruct public access to the beach and I believe there are also restrictions on alcohol and sound amplifications. Parks have fewer restrictions once you get the permit, but some fun ones include: -shall not "construct, use, place, occupy, leave, or in any other many, situate any tent" -shall not " Engage in or conduct any activity that creates any sound, noise or music exceeding 80 dBA sound pressure level taken at a point 10 feet in front of the source for a cumulative time period of at least five minutes when measured with a calibrated American National Standard Institute (ANSI) Type I or Type II sound level meter with weighting set at “A” and response set at “slow” except any activity that is sponsored by the city or the department of parks and recreation or authorized by permit issued by the city" I share that information simply because many people come to Hawaii to get married thinking they can "just get married on the beach" and because if you can comply with all those restrictions parks are by far the most affordable venue we've got out here in a market that caters to destination and luxury weddings. One really cool venue we have here in Honolulu is the Ho'okupu Center. It's a green facility, you get a discount if you use their in-house catering (which has an incredible menu and is locally sourced, mostly farm-to-table) that for guest counts around ours is still cheaper than most other base prices for venues out here. It's waterfront and basically a big open air pavillion with doors on the side. The main downsides are that you can only book up to a year in advance and it's in Kewalo Basin, so there are a lot of homeless people in the parks nearby and often in the parking lot before you get to the center.

The charcuterie is EPIC.

Would you recommend a Day of coordinator if the wedding is more DIY style? Only vendors will be photo, officiant and mariachi?

Ooo I went to a wedding with a pre-ceremony gathering(there was still a full cocktail hour) but the half hour before the ceremony it was a small dessert hors d’oeuvre spread. Not a full one but literally there was a sign next to the ceremony spot that said “why not dessert first?” It was brilliant and amazing and I loved everything about it❣️❣️❣️

About having to invite all the uncles/aunts/cousins to not ruffle feathers... My aunt's 3 daughters didn't invite us to their weddings so the feathers are pre-ruffled and they definitely aren't invited 😂

Peer space is also a great idea. My husband and I are having our wedding at the Resort we are staying at for the week. We are paying 650 for 8 hours. Amazing I know!!! With a prep Kitchen a reception area and a second room for either a kid space or a changing space. We are super excited, and they have a garden BOOM! Ceremony space our guest will have to stand but the ceremony will be less than 10-15 minutes. I feel so bless. I was so overwhelmed with all of the details, we went on vacation, and I just so happen to ask about meeting spaces and the lady said yeah, we do right upstairs!!! MIC Drop!!! Venue under 1000 dollars is possible. Also staying there was not necessary.

I'm from Quebec as well, and it is largely accepted and even expected to pay for attending a wedding nowadays. In fact, I've never attended a wedding WITHOUT paying up front. Of course, then you're not expected to bring a gift on top of it. I actually prefer that way more than having to think of a present or guessing how much money should I put in a card. Just like you would pay when you go the restaurant. In comparison, if you were to celebrate your birthday at a restaurant and invite your friends, who ever wants to come will pay for their dinner, you wouldn't take the bill for everyone.. Your loved ones also don't want you to break the bank so they can get a free meal, everyone knows that even if you pay around 60 for the evening, that doesn't cover the whole wedding. The bride and groom are still going to have to spend a lot of money. :)

I never in 1 million years would've thought wedding planning would have been so stressful. I was told that if I did not have boneless chicken at the wedding that this person would leave and go to a restaurant and then come back. I cannot tell you how much extreme stress this person put me through on what was supposed to be a happy time in my life. My fiancé at the time and I never had arguments. We might have a little disagreements, but we have never had a fierce argument until this person tried to control everything about my wedding and was criticizing all my choices and it just was ridiculous. Her offer to help turned into her wanting to control everything and then getting mad if I chose my own flowers dress, etc..

This happened in a locker room when I was a kid and I remember it so vividly I stopped my photographer from hanging my dress in the hotel on the sprinkler

4:04 this is why we are opting for a wooden plane propellor (husband is a pilot) that way we can hang it in an office after the wedding and it’s decor and memories

It's so true about photography cancellingg out your makeup. I went to a wedding where when I first saw the bride I was like "yikes, that's heavy-handed" but her photos were impeccable

As a wedding videographer who just finally went full time after 5 years of burning myself out, she lost me as a viewer and supporter because I can't understand how someone who owns a business (and is asking her followers to support her financially), she can so easily put other small business owners down.

How would you mix 2 decor themes in 1 reception room. I try to find commonality and have a transition space where the dance floor is 1 theme (forest) and the dinner area is another (beach)

Sams club for bulk fresh florals and garlands!

I appreciate this so much! I plan on getting married in October and get my graduate school thesis presented by August. I’m also working full time so I’m one sneeze from loosing my marbles.

I have a dress that was wonderful at my wedding. It was $1,200 from the bridal shop. I now would like to either sell or donate it so that others can get a gorgeous dress that they would not otherwise be able to afford. I don't know how much it will cost to clean and I had an outdoor courtyard wedding. I really appreciate this info

My MIL kept suggesting the mirrors but I couldn’t help thinking of coke mirrors and that was NOT my vibe. She also kept suggesting live fish in a fishbowl with roses😅

My sister and I both had no florals at our weddings (okay, my sister at least had a bouquet, I had zero flowers). We saved so much money! Her centerpieces were lanterns, mine was different nerd stuff, partly presented in cloches and hoops. I had a table runners of all colours, for every table a different one; I wore a rainbow necklace, hairband and button/felt flowers bouquet. All of that did not cost much. No bridal party. There are lots of ideas out there when you just google "nonfloral centerpiece" :)

We used mirrors on the tables with fresh flowers in crystal vases (from the antique or charity shops). Added lots of crystal votive holders with candles. The light from the candles with the mirrors looked very nice. I had no idea a mirror is out of date but not going to toss my Mirror collection.

My wedding was last month but spotted the title and thought I'd share. I had a florist and absolutely adored the fresh, colourful spring arrangements she did for the tables and arch. I saved bottles and jars to save money and the best bit was I donated all of these to a local elderly residents' home the next day! They put them in the restaurant and apparently loved them. Consider passing on the love and share the happiness of your big day!

a useful thing to know for winter greenery, use alcohol to get pine sap off your hands/out of clothes

For my wedding, I kept the flowers at a minimum at the church because it was only 30 ninute ceremony. We didn't have any flowers at the church pews just white bows. At the alter we rented large gold candalaberas (about 5 feet tall each) to flank us & our wedding party. We had a large floral spray for our unity candle table that we brought to the reception & put at the head wedding party table. Bridesmaids' flower bouquets & mine went in vases at our head table to. That's all the flowers we had from our ceremony that went to the reception. Our church did have large artifical flower basket displays toward to back of the alter too. It was a bit plain at the church but we we were satisfied. Our reception had more flowers, votive candle, decor.

Re: same space for both ceremony and reception. We did this almost 15 years ago for a wedding and recently attended two weddings that used the same space for both. In all cases, the tables were preset with a center area for an aisle/dance floor. Couples exited after the ceremony to have photos taken then were announced when they reentered. One couple had the food tables set up (covered) in the rear of the gymnasium. The other two used an adjacent room for food/buffet setup. One had guests go through the buffet line while the wedding party was elsewhere taking photos. The other couple had guests wait until the wedding party returned before dismissing to the food area. All 3 methods were both beautiful and successful. No post- ceremony "flips" were necessary.

What are these bud vases who keep referring to?

I'm getting married next month, and dried flowers have been such a great cheap alternative! We ordered a bunch on Etsy (about $5 for each little bouquet) and a package of 30 mini vases, plus a package of mini lanterns, and this combo is looking so cute as a centerpiece!

I can’t recommend Trader Joe’s enough for florals. They always have the best stuff. They’re mostly seasonal though, so keep that in mind too if you wanted something rare.
